Keeping Shutters Clean A Few Simple Rules

Keeping Shutters Clean A Few Simple Rules

There is nothing quite like newly installed shutters to give a lift to an existing dwelling, or to add that final touch of class to a brand new home. The crisp, clean lines draw the eye and the new mechanisms make adjusting the blades a simple, smooth operation. However, air-borne pollution is almost impossible to avoid, so shutters need regular cleaning to keep them looking like new.

Advanced manufacturing techniques and superior materials mean that quality shutters like those we custom build at Newport Custom Shutters will look like new for many years with simple and regular care. With just a little time and a few common cleaning tools, your shutters will pass any inspection. This need not be difficult, although there are some “do’s and don’ts”.

Start a Regular Cleaning Routine

To keep all interior shutters clean and dust free, do start a regular cleaning regime when they are first installed. First, close the shutters, then using a vacuum cleaner, run the soft furniture brush over both the front and back of the blades. Then, with the blades open, capture any remaining dust, lint, pet hair, et cetera, with a further vacuum, or by running a microfibre cloth between each blade.

Safety is Always First

Don’t forget to clean the very top of the shutters to prevent dust build-up from filtering down over the newly cleaned blades. If the windows are particularly high, and the vacuum cleaner will not reach the area, remember that your safety comes first. Use a purpose-built step ladder available from major hardware chain stores to reach the area. Do not use household furniture such as a chair or table.

Abrasives Not Required

With regular dusting, shutters only require a rub over with a damp cloth every now and then to keep them looking in top condition. Sometimes, a spot clean may be needed if a particular section becomes soiled. If this happens, a soft, damp cloth and mild detergent is all that is needed. Do not use anything abrasive that will scratch the surface. Do wipe dry immediately if the blinds become saturated for any reason. Do use all moving fittings regularly to keep their action smooth and easy to use.

Exterior Shutters Just as Easy to Keep Clean

Exterior shutters respond well to regular cleaning with a long-handled broom dipped in mild detergent, followed by hosing down using a regular garden hose and a wipe over with a dry cloth. Pressure cleaning is normally not necessary unless the shutters have not been cleaned for some time, and there is a build-up of dirt and grime.

Although we use several different materials in manufacturing our range, there is no need to keep multiple cleaning products on hand. All our shutters respond to the same simple cleaning process, so when you order from Newport Custom Shutters, you will get an excellent product that is easy to keep looking great.
